Tomorrow is the Day

AHHHHHHH,

I have about an hour left before I have to stop eating until after my surgery. I'm not as nervous anymore, i am actually at the excited point. But that will probably change when I get to the Hospital.

So I don't like the protien shakes (mainly because I can't stand Milk) so I have been trying to find a way to make my own and it taste good enough to drink for 4 days.  I bought the Whey Protien power about a month ago that was unflavored and OH MY GOD it is so GROSS. My mom bought me the supreme choc flavor to day and I just finished drinking a little of it and it was amazing! :) I put a 8oz single bottle of Motts apple juice, 2 bananas, and 1 scoop of whey protien and of course ice to make it a shake. It was a little applely tasting but I know for sure there was NO MILK in my shake, I am no longer worried about the liquid diet portion.

I am about to eat one of my favorite meals which is Macoroni with tomatoe juice, I can't wait until im able to eat my 1/4 cup of this in about a month.

On a sad note, I found out today that my foot injury from about 4 weeks ago that was causing me pain in my left foot has come back.  It stays steady around a 4/10 but it does get up to a 10/10. After my surgery when I get back home I will have to be in my Boot again until I can have my MRI done, which is scheduled for 11/12/12. :(  The doctor did mention that there is a problem that he can feel just by moving my foot and ankle and sometime it can lead to having to need surgery!!!!

Well all, Wish my Luck and I will post when I am home from the hospital which is also Halloween so I know its 2 days early but Happy Halloween!

Getting Nervous & Got the Call

I am beyond nervous. It is getting closer and closer to day of my Surgery.  It is a little after 8pm and I have 2 hours left at work which then marks one more days of work :)  I got the call from the surgery coordinator on 10/23/12.  They let me know that my surgery will be at 10:30am meaning I have to check in at 8:30am. I have to stop eating at midnight and then only clear liquids between midnight and 6:30am then Nothing at all from that point on until after surgery.  I am so glad that I have such a great support system.

I am however nervous because this is my first surgery where I am of age and can't have my parents with me in recovey. Ok i know I am 21 but Im not use to it and it is even to the point where I don't even know who is picking me up from the hospital on the next day. With my mom having the day care at home all the children are on Fall break and the children can not be at the hospital until I get a room and even when I do have a room, I don't really want a whole bunch of children there.

I will probably not post again until after my surgery, have to finish up my last two school work assignments that are due tomorrow. :)

10/22/2012

This was the day of my first MRI for my research study.  I was a bit nervous because of course I didn't know what to expect. I arrived at 7:15am and had an IV cath put in since they will be drawling blood every 15mins for 4 hrs. I know a lot of blood and by the end I did get a little light headed.

I then when to another building were the MRI would take place. I had to change into scrubs because my pants had a zipper. I have been fasting since 7pm the night before.  I wasnt hungry at all at this point probably because I am still usually sleeping. I answered three pages of questions and then practiced playing the money game which i will play once I am in the machine. The game is a money game where two amounts of money show on the screen, one amount of money you get now & the other amount you get at a later date. For example $40 now or $49 in 2 weeks. Then you have about 4 secs to decide. the amounts and time frame change time.

While in the MRI I lay there with a pager in my left hand in case I need something, a clicker w/ two buttons for the money game in my right hand. I have a reader thing on my forhead and then a pair of goggles on which is how I would see the pictures of food and other objects and also to play the game.

I was in the machine for an hour at a time looking at the pictures and then playing the game and even got to watch the Simpsons for about 30mins. after 1 hr i come out and get to drink a shake which was around 10am then after that i had my 2nd blood draw and then filled out those 3 pages of questions again. Then back into the MRI machine again for another hour.

I then went back to the first building and had two more blood draw 30 mins apart from each other that i passed the time by watching tv. Then they fed me a huge meal ( i only had about half if that).

During this whole time I thought my contact in my left eye was irratating my eye and it was slightly pink when i got to the place. by the time i went back to the other building to have the final two blood draw, my eye was so red it looked like blood. The nurse that they have on site came in and said it was for sure not my contact and 100% pink eye :(   My mother owns a home day care and I later found out that one of the children was out with pink eye and another was waiting to be picked up because of possible pink eye! Figures a week before my surgery I would get sick.

Research Study

Ok so the day I went in for my very first appt in June I was approached by a research group doing a study through the weightlose surgery clinic I was at.

After reading thru everything that they were researching I had decided to be apart of the study.

I had my first visit with them in September because I had to go in about a month pre-op so they could get the base line data they needed.

The study is studying the brains reaction to food before and after a weightlose intervention. I am in the lapband group, there is the gastric by pass group and all a diet shake group.

I then had a DEXA scan on Sep 19th.  This scan shows you the amount of fat in your body and how much your bones weigh and how each individual part of your body (head, neck, leg, hand) weighs.
This same day I was given a machine similiar to a pedometor to wear for a week and also a PDA to answer questions about food and exercise (it was measuring a week of my daily life as is now)

On October 19th I was given a 3-day diet of food that the research Kitchen prepared. It had breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack. I was to eat only the food they gave me and nothing else but water.

On Oct 22, 2012 which is tomorrow I will undergo what they call a FMRI which just means First MRI, because I am going to be having about 4 MRI's during this study.  I have to go into the office fasted and they put a caterder into my vein so they can draw as much blood as they need to without poking me a million different time, they I have to answer a couple od questions and then spend an hour in the MRI and then get a liquid breakfast, then another hour and then some questions and then they feed me lunch.  During this whole process they are drawling blood every 15 mins.

After this visit I don't go back to them until 3 weeks post op or 30lbs weightlose which ever is first.

Diet Progression

For those of you that don't know what a Lap Band is and what happens once you have it, well here is what I know:

The surgery involves having a silicon band wrapped around the upper portion of your stomach and a line leading to a port that is place under the skin that allows the doctor to insert or take out saliene solution to tighten or lossen the band around my stomach as needed.

After the surgery I will be on a clear liquid diet until I go home

Day 1-4
I will be on a Full Liquid Diet

Day 4-8
I will be on a pureed Diet

Day 8- 30
I will be on a Soft food Diet

I dont think there is another stage in between these

Month Post-op
I will be on Regular Food again! :)
I will slowly have to reintroduce food into my diet. Such as meat and spicy food.

My stomach can only hold about 1/4 - 1/2 cup of food
It will slowly increase as I continue my life with a lap band but not to more then a cup of food.

Pre-Op & Pre-Procedure Appts.

I finally got the call for my surgery date and I am Scheduled for October 30, 2012.

All i had to do now was go to my Pre-op appt on  Oct 19th and my nutrtion class on Oct 10th

I got a call on Oct 17th that I needed to come in on Oct 18th for a pre-procedure appt. Which i thought was what I had scheduled  on the 19th.  But once I got there I found out this appt was mainly for the anaseiologist and my appt on the 19th was for my surgery in general. At this appt they asked questions about my past surgeries and all took an EGK (results: Very Healthy Heart)

On Oct 19th I went to my Pre-op which was kind of like a basic doctors check up appt. but at the end they gave me a paper that told me the requirments for the day before surgery and told me I was going to be Staying Over Night :(

Requirements :(

The requirements for the Lap Band surgery in order for me to be approved by my insurance are:

  • 6 months of seeing my primary doctor once a month consecutively.
  • Attend a nutrition class
  • Have a Psych Evaluation
It wasnt hard to get in to see my primary doctor seeing as Im always there anyway :)
I was not looking forward having a Psych Evaluation-mainly because I didn't know what to expect.
The Nutrition class was very informational and I am glad it was required.
